n the darkness of early morning Verna, Ron and I flew to Delhi for a quick side trip. (You simply cannot travel ALL the way to India and not see the Taj Mahal.) The total student-body of Prakash were out in front to wish them a “Hearty Goodbye,” and more garlands.
Of course, there were tears… for Verna, and Ron had come to love these young people and saw such potential in them for transformed lives.
A car and driver met us at the Delhi airport and we headed directly to Agra for a Taj Mahal tour the next morning. Traffic was horrific and caused us to have a six and half hour drive. Not all of is was so bad, due to the fact there was a delightful stop for lunch.
When first planning Verna and Ron’s visit to India, Ron was not so sure he needed to see the
Taj Mahal. He had, after all, seen plenty of pictures and TV specials on the spectacular mausoleum. As we were standing on the platform looking up at the giant white marble teardrop dome glistening in the sunlight, he said, “I am so glad you didn’t listen to me. There is no picture ever taken that can capture the grandeur, beauty, and spirit of this place.”
NOT A BAD PICTURE FOR MY LITTLE OLD CAMERA…DON’T YOU THINK?
Verna was almost more excited over the fact I had surprised them with a camel cart ride to the Taj. Since 9/11 cars are not allowed within a large radius of the Taj, and let’s face it, a camel cart ride is more fun than an electric cart.
Beginning somewhat behind schedule, as we were leaving Agra, I lend forward and told the driver, “GO FAST.” Well, fast we did go. There is a very new Yamuna Expressway from Agra to Delhi. I could not believe I was in India. Like I have always said…”India is the Land of Contrast.”
We made it back to Delhi in three and a half hours. In plenty of time to check into the hotel before going to the Light and Sound show at the Red Fort. Next day we toured a little of Delhi, seeing the India Gate,
which was very emotional…somewhat like our Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and few other sights.
Mostly, we enjoyed staying in the hotel and reminiscing about Verna and Ron’s trip. Additionally we had some great sister time.
I do not really know how Verna can have so many “FAVORITE DAYS,” but she did. I had a “favorite opportunity,” getting to show her and Ron, MY India.
Thank you again for your prayers and support
